Coral Reef Reassembled Ring Teapot

17" tall x 15" wide x 7 " deep
cone 5 oxidation firing

Usually I start a new teapot by picturing a shape or composition in my mind.  By the time I have completed the teapot, I have a pretty good idea of how I am going to glaze it. With this teapot I started with the glaze color, which is made with ceramic Mason Stain #6026, Lobster Red.  My mother was born and raised in Rockland, Maine, and my parents retired to Union, Maine, so my family and I have spent many happy days in the midcoast Maine area, and have often enjoyed a good lobster dinner.  I tried to evoke the lobster’s claw in the reassembled composition of the teapot body, and I made an abstraction of the lobster’s claw for the lid finial.  Our daughter pointed out that live lobsters are really green, and only dead boiled lobsters are red, so we agreed to call this teapot “Coral Reef,” as the teapot’s vibrant color can also be found in live tropical coral reef outcroppings.

This teapot is held in a private collection in Aspen, Colorado.
